[1:51]  1 tn Heb “King Solomon.” The name and title have been replaced by the pronoun (“you”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[1:51]  2 tn Or “swear an oath to.”

[2:15]  3 tn Or “kingship.”

[2:15]  4 tn Heb “set their face to me to be king.”

[2:15]  5 tn Heb “and the kingdom turned about and became my brother’s, for from the Lord it became his.”

[7:27]  6 tn Heb “four cubits.”

[7:27]  7 tn Heb “four cubits.”

[7:27]  8 tn Heb “three cubits.”

[8:35]  9 tn Heb “when.” In the Hebrew text vv. 35-36a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided into two sentences for stylistic reasons.

[8:35]  10 tn Heb “they”; the referent (your people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[8:35]  11 tn Heb “confess [or perhaps, “praise”] your name.”

[8:35]  12 tn The Hebrew text has “because you answer them,” as if the verb is from עָנָה (’anah, “to answer”). However, this reference to a divine answer is premature, since the next verse asks for God to intervene in mercy. It is better to revocalize the consonantal text as תְעַנֵּם (tÿannem, “you afflict them”), a Piel verb form from the homonym עָנָה (“to afflict”).

[8:39]  13 tn The words “their sin” are added for clarification.

[8:39]  14 tn Heb “and act and give to each one according to all his ways because you know his heart.” In the Hebrew text vv. 37-39a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided up for stylistic reasons.

[8:39]  15 tn Heb “Indeed you know, you alone, the heart of all the sons of mankind.”

[10:5]  16 tn Heb “the food on his table.”

[10:5]  17 tn Heb “the seating of his servants and the standing of his attendants.”

[10:5]  18 tn Heb “there was no breath still in her.”

[10:7]  19 tn Heb “the half was not told to me.”

[10:7]  20 tn Heb “good.”

[13:18]  21 tn Heb “and he said to him.”

[13:18]  22 tn Heb “by the word of the Lord.

[13:18]  23 tn Heb “eat food and drink water.”

[13:18]  24 tn Or “deceiving him.”

[13:18]  sn He was lying to him. The motives and actions of the old prophet are difficult to understand. The old man’s response to the prophet’s death (see vv. 26-32) suggests he did not trick him with malicious intent. The old prophet probably wanted the honor of entertaining such a celebrity, or perhaps simply desired some social interaction with a fellow prophet.

[14:5]  25 sn Tell her so-and-so. Certainly the Lord gave Ahijah a specific message to give to Jeroboam’s wife (see vv. 6-16), but the author of Kings here condenses the Lord’s message with the words “so-and-so.” For dramatic effect he prefers to have us hear the message from Ahijah’s lips as he speaks to the king’s wife.
